A Barcode consists of alternating black and white bars that usually have two different widths. The code in a barcode can be numeric or alphanumeric.
Automated scanning of large quantities of documents, speeds up throughput and reduces operations tasks with Batch Scan Wizard.
Automated document capture. The order of processes that are applied to the batch are predefined in a configuration file.
Digital representation of a document.
Black and white pictures have one bit per pixel. The logical state 1 equals black and the logical state 0 equals white. This scheme is primarily used in printing technology, however, other schemes may also be found.
Gray- and color information is similarly coded. Each pixel is represented through one or more bitmaps.
The term describes bitmaps that only contain black and white information.
See Planetary Scanner.
Software package for professional document capture developed by Image Access. The software can scan, index, read characters (OCR) and also reads barcode information. Setting up a batch process is also possible with this package.

CCITT defined these data compression standards for loss-free data compression. These standards are used in fax machines and are also widely used in the imaging industry. CCITT G3 und G4 are basically either one-dimensional or two-dimensional run length encoding. The shorter the codes, the higher the statistical probability of success for a given run will be.

A method to reduce the file size without discarding information. In our industry, the term data compression usually refers to the compression of images.
Automated or software-assisted correction of the skew angle of a misfed document after scanning.
Automated or software-assisted noise reduction of bitonal documents. After scanning, documents usually have some speckles (black or white pixels) that are isolated and therefore rarely have information in them. These are called speckles. Despeckle removes speckles.
Abbreviation for Dynamic Link Library. A DLL contains program functions which can be used by more than one application.
A document is a media that contains text and/or graphical information. It can be on paper, in electronic form, or on other media.
Abbreviation for Documents Per Minute.
DPM specifies the throughput of a scanner. Some vendors use IPM-values, which will result in a two-fold number for a duplex scanner compared to DPM.
These scanners will scan the front and back page of a document in one pass.
Energy Star is an international standard for energy efficient consumer products.
The Energy Star logo appears on many computer products and peripherals ...
Scanner in which the sheet to be scanned is laid flat on a glass plate and the light source moves below the glass.
WideTEK 25
A high speed parallel interface, that transmitts raw video data. This interface has been developed by Fujitsu and is a defacto industry standard. Image Access´ HiSCAN boards support this interface.
Different levels of gray in a bitmap. The most common format is the 8-bit bitmap. Usually 0 translates to black and 256 translates to white. All other values are linearly distributed between these extremes.
Scanner interface board developed by Image Access. Its purpose is to gather data form different video ports at very high speed and compress the data in real time. The data is then transferred into an application.

The reproduction of a document is a complex process; and at least three input and output devices are involved in this process: scanner, screen and printer. Each device handles colors of the image in a different way. There are many reasons for that: the devices support different color spaces (for example, CMYK or RGB) or they use different (wider or narrower) ranges of colors. When scanning documents further problems occur: Ambient light characteristics or temperature fluctuation of the device can lead to deviations in the color fidelity. This is especially relevant for open scanning systems like planetary scanners or flatbed scanners with open lid, because the documents are confronted with continuous change of light. The goal of the color management is that the scanned and printed document features at the end the same color quality as the original document.
To reduce all input and output devices to a common color denominator, the so-called ICC device profiles are calculated. Such profiles describe the color spaces and how devices should reproduce them. In order to profile the devices the special profiling software is required.
For this purpose, Image Access has developed an online tool Scan2ICC.
A file that contains information how to produce an image on the screen. Image files are ususally bitmap oriented.
Image Processing is the adaptation, modification and interpretation of the information in a scanned document.
Areas in a bitmap which are specified to contain text, image or barcode information. BSCAN i.e. can read information in index fields through its OCR or Barcode engine and index or preindex documents automatically.
Abbreviation for Images Per Minute.
This specifies the throughput of a scanner. Duplex scanners have a two-fold value because the front and back side are scanned simultaneously and result in two images.
Abbreviation for Industry System Architecture.
This is the oldest and now outdated bus system for PCs.
Almost all well-known scanner board vendors have discontinued support of this bus system. It is replaced by the standardized and faster PCI-bus.
A software interface from the company Pixel Translations intended to make the handling of scanners independant from drivers and hardware. Because this interface is not royalty-free, most vendors prefer the TWAIN standard.
Abbreviation for Joint Photographers Experts Group. JPEG is the compression standard worldwide for digital images.
Orientation of a document. Landscape means that the document is wider than it is high.
Large Format Scanners are used to digitise documents in A2 format and larger.
WideTEK 36
WideTEK 42
WideTEK 48
Abbreviation for Optical Character Recognition.
A method to read text information from scanned documents.
Abbreviation for Original Equipment Manufacturer.
An OEM supplies parts or complete devices to his customer, another manufacturer that puts his name on the product.
Electronics that serve as the interface between conventional electronics and light (photons). A CCD is an optoelectronic device.
Describes the orientation of a document. Two orientations are generally used: portrait and landscape.
Abbreviation for Peripheral Components Interface.
This is the standard bus for PC-boards. Its 32-bit or 64-bit transfer cycles and its high speed allow much more performance than the older ISA-bus.
Abbreviation for Portable Document Format.
PDF/A is an ISO Standard for using PDF format for the long-term archiving of
electronic documents.
Image Access is the first scanner manufacturer worldwide to offer the possibility to archive documents directly in PDF/A standard for its WideTEK range of scanners.

The smallest unit in an image. One pixel equals one spot on the screen.

Planetary Scanners preserve the original condition of valuable books, delicate or historical documents. The documents are placed on the scanning surface. The subsequent overhead digitisation process eliminates the need to turn over the documents.
Book Scanner A2
Book Scanner A1
An automatic procedure to detect extension boards. Plug and Play will also assign all neccessary resources (interrupts, DMAs, memory and I/O space) to the extension board.
Orientation of a document. Portrait means that the document is higher than it is wide.
Abbreviation for Page Per Minute.
It specifies the performance of a scanner. US-letter sized paper is generally used.
Resolution is measured in dots per inch [dpi]. Each dot is separately scanned or printed. The higher the resolution is, the more fine details will be found in the scanned or printed document. A higher resolution also results in a higher amount of data. If uncompressed, doubling the resolution results in four times more data.
Abbreviation for Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
An EU directive intended to protect the environment by forcing manufacturers to remove environmentally hazardous substances from scanners.
All scanners from Image Access are both RoHS compliant and Energy Star certified.

Unlike a bitmap graphic, the vector graphic does not contain pixel information. Instead, the data in this graphic format describes vectors and other mathematical objects, which then produce an image after being processed by an output device. The major advantage of this format is, that the information will always show up, even if not displayed in the right size.
